Mrs. Heard is the class teacher and Mrs. Veneziale is the teaching assistant. On a Thursday afternoon, the class is taught and dismissed by Mrs Montgomery.
P.E lessons are currently taught on Thursday afternoons. It is important that the children have the correct named indoor and outdoor P.E kit with suitable footwear in school every day as we also have opportunities to work with sports coaches throughout the year.
Homework linked to the learning that has been completed in school is set for the children to complete each week. Spellings and multiplication tables are sent home on a weekly basis and we ask that your child reads daily for at least 10 minutes to support their fluency, understanding and inference skills. The children are given opportunities each day to change their book when their reading record is signed.
Spelling is taught through a programme called ‘Spelling Bee’. Each week the children investigate different word families and learn how to spell words from the termly word list and Year 5 statutory word list. Spelling tests take place on Thursdays.
Please help your child to keep their multiplication tables skills sharp with regular practise. All tables, including the linked division facts, should be known and recalled quickly. Mental arithmetic tests, including times tables, take place on Fridays.
During the Lent term our whole school learning theme is ‘Step back in time’. In Year 5 our history focus is on learning about the Anglo-Saxons, including why the Saxons invaded and the mystery of the empty Anglo-Saxon grave at Sutton Hoo. We will also be learning about Alfred the Great to find out who he was and whether he was really that great! We are also reading the heroic tale of Beowulf and his battle against the monster Grendel.
Keep visiting our page to see what we are up to!
Please do not hesitate to come and speak to Mrs. Heard if you have any questions about homework or you would like to discuss anything.
If your child is awarded a certificate or trophy out of school, do send them in – we enjoy sharing and celebrating their achievements in class and assembly!
