Welcome to our Class Page
Mrs Tunn is the class teacher on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Ms Prasad is the class teacher on Thursday and Friday. Mrs Fawkes is our teaching assistant every morning.
With Mrs Tunn, we are moving through the Year 6 Maths Curriculum focusing on Number and Calculations. The children are learning to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics and to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry. In lessons, we ensure they can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication.
In English, we have handwriting, spelling, grammar, punctuation and writing lessons. Working with Mrs Tunn, the children have daily Book Talk sessions to promote a love of reading and develop their comprehension skills.
In Religion lessons, we follow the Come and See programme. The children are encouraged to deepen their belief and their understanding of faith through lessons that will ask them to explore, reveal and respond to stories from the Bible and the real world.
With Ms Prasad, in maths, we are deepening our knowledge of measures and learning to increase our speed of arithmetic calculations. We are also enhancing our maths through a weekly mixed maths quiz.
In English we are focusing on our reading comprehension skills and learning to develop our exam techniques for SATs. Our half-term topic this term is ‘What a Wonderful World’ where we are learning geography facts about our planet and understanding different types of maps.
Following our Science topic of ‘Living things and their habitats’ where we learnt about classification of animals and microorganisms we are now learning about ‘Evolution and Adaptation’ in Science. Investigating great Scientists such as Charles Darwin and their theories of origins of animal species.
Spellings are taught through a programme called ‘Spelling Bee’. Each week the children investigate different word families and spelling patterns. Children are given 10 words chosen from the termly word list on Thursdays, which are tested the following Thursday. The spelling list for each week can be obtained below.
Homework is distributed on a Wednesday and will always relate to the week’s learning. Children will receive 2 pieces of homework which must be returned to school the following Tuesday for marking.
Reading books are changed when the children have finished and reviewed their current book. Assessments will take place every half term to encourage the children to continuously improve their reading skills and move through the book bands. A signature from an adult is required 3 times a week in your child’s reading record book.
PE will be outdoors every week. Please ensure your child has warm layers of clothing and suitable footwear to take part in outdoor games.
Please do not hesitate to come and speak to either teacher if you have any questions or you would like to discuss anything.
