Welcome to our Class Page
Welcome to Year One! We are St Rose Class; Miss McCormack is the Class teacher and Mrs Mears is the teaching assistant.
We progress through 3 phases of teaching and learning based upon pedagogies and theories about how children learn best. Phase 1 is a continuous provision approach with individual challenge. Phase 2 is a carousel approach which prepares children for the whole class teaching. Phase 3 is whole class teaching in preparation for Year 2. If you would like to come and see Year 1 in action through the phases, please contact the school office to arrange an appointment.
We have three main topics that we base our curriculum around: ‘Lights, Camera, Action!’, ‘Step Back In Time’ and ‘Colourful Cultures’. Within these 3 topics, we focus on Traditional Tales, Victorians and Africa. Our curriculum is enhanced by exciting trips and visits throughout the school year.

Please can we ask that you listen to your child read their phonetically decodable book 3-4 times a week. The children also get to choose a book from our ‘book swap box’ to share with you at home. This is to encourage reading for pleasure and a love of reading. This can be read by you or them (or both), and please also record this in their reading record. You can record any reading for pleasure in their reading record (we love to see it!), and please do this 1-2 times a week. This will help bring our reading up to 5 times every week which will help our phonics immensely!
Year One is the year children really become ‘readers’ and I know you will be supporting them with this.
If you have any books at home that are no longer read by your family but would benefit from a loving home, please consider donating them to our book swap box so we can have different choices!
The children are also learning their number bonds to 10 please help them by practising at home. We do a challenge each week to try and beat our score from the week before!
Please remember that I am on hand to answer any of your questions whenever you need me – if you can’t get to talk to me in person, please send a message via Class Dojo and I will answer you as soon as I can.
